This presentation will talk about the value of having a deportation defense unit or embedded immigration attorneys within a public defender office, as well as how to go about creating such positions. What does it look like for us to push beyond Padilla towards a more robust system of indigent defense on behalf of immigrant clients? What would embedded immigration defense attorneys be able to do? What do the existing models look like and what have embedded immigration defense attorneys been able to accomplish in public defender offices?
