Many public defender offices are moving towards "holistic practice" and a "client-centered" approach while not making changes in office/public defense culture that are necessary for interdisciplinary practices that reflects these terms. In many federal and public defender offices, non-attorneys are not even acknowledged as "public defenders." This presentation will begin with the nuts and bolts of what holistic practice feels like day-to-day and move towards specific actions, activities and demands that public defenders can make towards creating office cultures that honor all staff as public defense professionals, and centers the client as the leading contributor to the defense team. Attendees will reflect about their own practices, what each interdisciplinary staff member brings to each defense team, and what they envision for the future of public defense through large and small group discussions.
