Felony murder laws widen the net of extreme sentencing and are counterproductive to public safety.
This session:
  1. Presents a legal and empirical foundation for abolishing felony murder laws, in part by assessing their adverse impacts on people of color, young people, and women
  2. Shares the results of a 50-state survey examining when this conviction results in a life-without-parole sentence and with what mens rea requirement
  3. Discusses the scope and limitations of recent reform efforts. The presenter will draw heavily from her report on this topic, co-published by The Sentencing Project and Fair and Just Prosecution.
